Whether you are new to Twitter or just newly active on the microblogging platform, you will want to build up followers. Although there are not 300 million users on Twitter like there are on Facebook, this tool offers a great return without a lot of investment for anyone utilizing it correctly. With a strategic approach you can build up a following and start to push your content out to them. This will promote your site or blog, therefore promoting you as an authority in your industry.

Social: When it comes to social networking you have to remember the first word is “social.” Before you can build up followers on Twitter you will need to take a little time reaching out to some of the social networking communities. Your first step is to create some profiles on networks like Facebook, Stumbleupon, Leapfish, Linkedin, Propeller, Digg and Reddit. Update your profile to include some of your interests (professional and personal), join some groups and most importantly add a link to your Twitter account (usually there is a field for your Twitter or website). It is important to fill in as much info as possible within your profile; including a picture is a must.

Networking: The second step in obtaining a well rounded group of followers is to start connecting with people on these networks. Comment on other people’s writings, leave feedback and add friends. Do not only focus on professional topics, become a part of groups that appeal to you personally. You want people that share the same interests to see you since your writings and your work will appeal to them just as it does to you. During whole social network push which should not take up very much of your time, just little bits here and there, you should be following people on Twitter that interest you or provide important knowledge.

Tweeting: To make sense of all this work and yield some response, you have to be working on the third step. Tweet. When you post on Twitter make sure you do not spam, bombarding your followers with too much info that is uninteresting will push them away. Do not only post informational posts either, try and mix it up between professional and personal. Personal posts will help you fit in while expanding your followers, professional posts will show your authority and knowledge.

When you post your professional posts it is best to link to a story or blog, even a website is ok, but be sure to use a URL shortening client like Bit.ly. Using Bit.ly will make it so you can fit more keywords in your tweets and track your click data.

So be social by expressing yourself and joining social networking sites, network by adding people that you are interested in or are interested in the same things as you and tweet interesting/important information.  Follow these steps to create a Twitter following for marketing, yielding a group of tweeters that share your interests and understand you are an industry authority.
